I did so many things, I saw so many things and I felt so many things that I will never be able to express them all. I expect that it will all come out in a jumble, but I will see what I can do.
I flew out to San Jose late Thursday to spend some time with
traumentwerfer and
laughingstone for a few days while getting the last few things ready. We chatted, packed, had coffee, and planned. I was stuck in a defensive communication mode, pointing out differences and having problems just appreciating. That broke later, after they helped me break through some problems, both physical and mental.
V, H and I needed bikes, so I took the truck to go find some. I was looking for playa bikes, something cheap (<$50), simple and reliable.
traumentwerfer gave me the addresses for two likely places, and I had my jeejah lead the way. The first place was cleaned out of bikes, and the second was in Oakland. Blindly following, I drove across a toll bridge (where I got fined for not having cash) to a re-cycle shop. After searching through the picked over bikes and parts, I was extremely worried that I wouldn’t be able to come through for everyone, almost to the point of having a minor panic attack over failure. Finally, a woman working there suggested that people should look over at the kids bikes. To my great relief, I found three that would work and headed back to Tortuga. The theme of worry about failure and recovering by relying on help was to repeat later. This time my jeejah took me over the Golden Gate. Crossing over it this time was a completely different experience from last year, but still beautiful. I’m developing a huge crush on that bridge.
I drove up the entire way, refusing to let anyone else take over. I enjoy driving and have some deep seated fears about anyone else driving, particularly large vehicles. The drive was long, but gave the five of us a chance to get to know each other a bit more. Other than that, yup, it was a long drive.
The line in was long and slow. I jumped out at some point, grabbed my bike and went to see how far back we were. It was going to be a while. Sometime after I got back it started to rain. It felt like such a great omen to see rain in the desert, knowing that it couldn’t last.
The rain started to slack up and then... DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY!!! No, really. We had a double rainbow across the entire sky, right over the line to get in. Everyone climbed out and on top of their cars and started doing bits of the famous video. Dance parties broke out. Beer, wine, bacon and other things started flowing. People celebrated while stuck in traffic. It was glorious.
Eventually the ground dried up enough for us to drive. We made it in and started setting up camp as the sun set.
More to come...
