Setting - My office
Time - Thursday Morning

Customer
Remember when we said we wanted your design to act according to this spec? Well, we've changed our mind. Here, have a new version of the spec.

Me
Ok, I can change that, it should be just a software fix. I'll need to get ahold of the part since I don't trust you to make the upgrade yourself without bricking it and I know you are on a tight schedule.

Customer
Cool, can you come out here to do the software upgrade and teach us how to do it? We've attached the part to a plane and don't know how to take it off in less than three days.

Me
Um... ok... When?

Customer
Could you be here Monday (and therefore leave on Sunday to get here)?

Me
Thats rather sudden.

Boss
I legally can't let you leave town until this other project that has been going horribly is finished for customer 2. However, since customer 1 is so much more important to us, I'm going to send you out Sunday. Good luck and Godspeed.

Being asked to recreate a moderately complex project that I worked on a year ago, and finding that I did, indeed, produce good, complete documentation on it.

The top row of my corkboard is empty. I don't know what to do.

Dear Silly People Still Using SDLC,

Would you mind moving into the 21st century? Or at least the late 20th? People's lives might depend on it.

Thanks!

When I first went to work here there were three unused cubes, yet several people were still sharing cubes. We spent this morning shuffling cubes around so the all of the engineers and most of the drafters now all have their own cube. I ended up moving, along with the rest of the EE's, to the short row of cubes in the middle of the building. I'm now farther away from the head of engineering, but I can overhear what goes on in the project manager's and sales offices so I should be able to keep up with any good management gossip. I have a lot more blank wall space now, so I need to get something to put up, and maybe a few plants.

It is fun being able to tell someone that they can't do what they want to do because the Earth revolves around the Sun.

I was up too late last night, so I burned some gasoline to get to work, and filled up my tank along the way.

I'm now officially EE in charge of the lab now, as well as EE in charge of a new project with a really aggressive time scale. Deliverable on a mostly custom gimbal is in late July, yet we still don't have full specs yet. Fun.

I'm now settled in enough to want to do things. Anyone up for anything this week?

My new job is going well. I'm going to be the EE in charge of the lab, in addition to everything else I do there. I also had my first software review today, just some changes to a GUI that I have been working on. It went well; they seemed quite impressed with how quickly I picked up on it and was able to do things. More importantly, everyone was quite receptive to me writing any new software in Python instead of VC . Of course, I am now a bit worried that the same thing will happen here that has happened at pretty much every job I've ever had has: I'm hired to do one thing, but end up being the go to guy for programming. Sigh.

So far my attempts to update my LJ more often have been going well, but I'm afraid it is becoming less interesting to read than it once was. Hmmm...
