Some little things

On my way to work today I raced a semi full of beerBudweiser, uphill. I won. Yay!

---

Last night my new razor came in, a Merkur 34C. It was much smaller than I was expecting, but ended up fitting in my hand fairly well. If I get another I will probably go for a longer handled one, just to see how it feels. After killing some 'net dragons and showering I decided it was time to try it out. I've never used a classic DE razor before, so it was an interesting experience. The DE is significantly more aggressive than any cartridge I've used, but I found that I had much more control and was left with a much smoother face. I gave myself a few nicks, mostly by trying to rush the job. With some more practice I'm sure I can fix that.

---

Finally, it has come to my attention that certain persons are planning a party at my house without behind my back. This sounds like a fine plan to me, though do be good enough to give us at least a weeks few hours warning. ;D

How to say this...

I've been working on what I should say in response to the Fed's latest action. Feel free to add your own.

Mmm... I love the smell of inflation in the morning

Dude, you're a central banker, not a blonde in a slasher flick. Act like it.

And for your next trick - Dollar-Peso parity!

Mr. Bernanke, my savings account and I would like to take this opportunity to say, "Fuck You!"

Also, 1/125.

A nice chat

While on my morning commute I rode up to a another guy on a bike. We started chatting about our commutes, the weather, that sort of thing. Eventually the conversation swung 'round to our occupations. It turns out he is a power engineer for PNM. We talked shop for about a mile until our paths diverged. It was interesting to talk with someone in my field, but in a completely different branch.

A conversation

Setting - My office
Time - Thursday Morning

Customer
Remember when we said we wanted your design to act according to this spec? Well, we've changed our mind. Here, have a new version of the spec.

Me
Ok, I can change that, it should be just a software fix. I'll need to get ahold of the part since I don't trust you to make the upgrade yourself without bricking it and I know you are on a tight schedule.

Customer
Cool, can you come out here to do the software upgrade and teach us how to do it? We've attached the part to a plane and don't know how to take it off in less than three days.

Me
Um... ok... When?

Customer
Could you be here Monday (and therefore leave on Sunday to get here)?

Me
Thats rather sudden.

Boss
I legally can't let you leave town until this other project that has been going horribly is finished for customer 2. However, since customer 1 is so much more important to us, I'm going to send you out Sunday. Good luck and Godspeed.

Me
...

It all makes sense now

Nothing hits me like a case of strep. It rips through me and puts me down for weeks, but anything else and I bounce back in a day. Strangely though, the quick strep test never comes back positive. The docs just put me on penicillin because it is very obvious that I do have it and then later the long test confirms it.

I just learned that the quick test does not actually test for strep directly, it tests for the antibodies you are supposed to produce to fight it. Making a small leap I take this to mean that I don't produce enough, if any, of the strep antibodies on my own, which is why it hits me so hard and it takes me so long to get over it. My immune system works great against anything else, but just can't see strep.

Things that make me happy at work

Being asked to recreate a moderately complex project that I worked on a year ago, and finding that I did, indeed, produce good, complete documentation on it.

Dear Silly People Still Using SDLC,

Would you mind moving into the 21st century? Or at least the late 20th? People's lives might depend on it.

Thanks!

First ride of the year

Last night I prepped a bit, filling up my tyres, waxing my chain, packing my bag. Today I started out quite early. It turns out I've lost a bit of endurance,, though not as much as I feared, and my lungs have picked up some crap, though not as much as I once had. I'm glad I picked up some winter gloves and a mask/hood thing.

The ride was nice, I gave myself plenty of time and tried to take it slow and not push myself. The hardest part of the ride was not trying to push myself too much and run out of steam early. It took me 35 minutes from the time I walked into the garage until I open the door at work. I should be able to shave 5-10 minutes off of that in a week or two. Driving my car takes 25-45 minutes depending on the day, the motorcycle takes 15-35.

Moving

When I first went to work here there were three unused cubes, yet several people were still sharing cubes. We spent this morning shuffling cubes around so the all of the engineers and most of the drafters now all have their own cube. I ended up moving, along with the rest of the EE's, to the short row of cubes in the middle of the building. I'm now farther away from the head of engineering, but I can overhear what goes on in the project manager's and sales offices so I should be able to keep up with any good management gossip. I have a lot more blank wall space now, so I need to get something to put up, and maybe a few plants.

Mixed day

Mixed day so far. I stopped at a Bike to Work week station for the free breakfast and picked up some of the free goodies.
Of course, I then received a call that, yet agin, someone else has picked up the house we wanted. Sigh. Anyone have any good ideas for housing in Burque that don't involve the west side?

Warrior

I was up too late last night, so I burned some gasoline to get to work, and filled up my tank along the way.

I'm now officially EE in charge of the lab now, as well as EE in charge of a new project with a really aggressive time scale. Deliverable on a mostly custom gimbal is in late July, yet we still don't have full specs yet. Fun.

I'm now settled in enough to want to do things. Anyone up for anything this week?

The Q

I've moved. My two days of wark have been good, so I think I'll stay for a while. I'm still getting used to the schedule, but it hasn't been too bad so far. My evenings have been short, mostly 'cause of the WoW dates I've been on with [livejournal.com profile] sacra_imbri.

But I'm here now, and on my way to bed.
